Private Boating Lessons

Welcome! You have taken the first, and the most essential step in owning a boat by at least exploring the option of taking a Private Boating Lesson. Proud and happy to say that 2026 will be my 30th season teaching, ON THE WATER RISK MANAGEMENT, AND SAFE DECISION MAKING for the recreational boating community. I was the first, and up until about 10 years ago, the only Captain to offer private boating lessons in the Boston/Cape Cod coastal area. I don't have a fancy corporate website because I am not a fancy corporate business. I am still the same down-to-earth Private Boating Lesson Captain now as I was when I started. "Mom and Pap" The one exception is with every lesson I have become a better teacher. So lets start at the beginning. You spend big money on a boat, gas, storage, docking, maintenance, equipment, insurance, repairs, and countless other expenses when it comes to owning a boat. Yet the ONLY category where you can actually use the adjective, "invest", instead of spend, when comes to boating, is participating in some sort of on the water training, and education. Unfortunately, it is the leading category where owners "skimp"! Penny wise and pound foolish?? Would you let your kids drive a car without formal on the road training and education?? An "adult," new boat owner, for example, without professional boating lessons, is far more dangerous to themselves, their passengers, and other boaters, than a 16 year old learning to drive a car! Something to think about as you read on. Prerequisites for participation: -You MUST have a boat-100% confidence in your instructor until you graduate.-Willingness and ability to be "coached" and or, taught and starting from scratch even if you have boating hours under your belt.-Full commitment and desire to learn a professional approach to recreational boating-Needless to say, a financial investment if you want to learn a safe professional approach to recreational boating If you meet these above prerequisites, then don't learn the hard way, learn the safe way with the BOATING PROFESSOR!These private boating lessons are designed to teach the basics of recreational boating using your boat as the classroom. From DOCKING and BOAT HANDLING, to mastering MARINE WEATHER, private boating lessons can not only be a more effective learning process than taking public courses, but it can also compliment and refresh what you have learned in the classroom and apply it to your vessel. Overall, they can make your boating experiences safer, professional, and gratifying for everyone involved. If you are NEW TO BOATING, these private boating lessons are perfect for getting started and feeling comfortable on your own vessel.
-If you are AN EXPERIENCED BOATER, taking some targeted lessons is a great intervention in overcoming pride, and bad habits, which, unfortunately, is widespread in the recreational boating world. In that context you are your own worst enemy. Experienced boaters are my most difficult students to win over, and gain their confidence, and ultimately teach. But once we get through that break in period these targeted lessons will expand your knowledge and break "bad habits" that you didn't know were bad and you will notice the results. In my 37 years of being a professional mariner, I've come to realize that you never stop learning! That includes yours truly. Every lesson I complete for my clients I learn new techniques and how to be a better teacher. Why me instead of another instructor? -First, I teach the way the U.S. Coast Guard taught me. My 100-ton license was earned to carry people on ferries, and certified motor yachts. There is no margin for error when carrying passengers. The same should apply to all recreational boaters. -Second, marine weather in particular, is a very important area that too many boaters neglect. Big mistake! The science interaction between the sea surface, the air above, and the surrounding land areas is an important science to understand so that a Captain, with reasonable confidence, can forecast a day out on the water. I pride myself at being an expert in this field as my interest in meteorology came to me as a child. I started out in my college days aspiring to be a meteorologist, but my business life took me in a different direction. It all came full circle when I chose the maritime industry as my ultimate profession.
-Third, you may be in a transition from a smaller single screw vessel, to a larger vessel with twin screw. I have 18 years experience on 50' to 120' vessels all having twin to quad screw. Successful docking in close quarters was a pre-requisite in my profession. I can help improve your docking and boat handling by teaching you the techniques that I have learned over those 18 years and past 40 years of combined experience, both recreationally and professionally. The bottom line is that my private boating lessons TEACH SAFE DECISION MAKING which can include not leaving the dock at all! That will save you a tank of fuel, wear and tear on your equipment and passengers at the very least, and at the most, save lives!! The former will pay for a lesson, and there is no price for the latter!
If you have already taken various quality boating courses through the U.S. Power Squadrons, or Coast Guard Auxiliary, all the better. My program will take what you have learned in the classroom and apply it to YOUR BOAT, and YOUR BOATING ENVIRONMENT! YOU NEED BOTH! Just like that 16 year old learning to drive for the first time.
Planning a long trip? I teach how to plan a voyage. This includes using paper charts, tide, current, and astronomical books. Yes, I said paper, and books. If you are "married" to electronics, and "apps", call the "geek squad"! I teach COMPARISON NAVIGATION. This combines utilizing all navigation tools and comparing information to come up with a position, projected position, explain what you are experiencing, and what to expect in terms of tides, currents, and marine weather. Its called being a CAPTAIN! Need your vessel moved from one local to another and are uncomfortable going it alone? I can assist, teach, and share all the Captain's duties with you all in one trip. Want to leave the "driving" to someone qualified with confidence while you entertain and play host to your guests? Look no further! The bottom line is that you can design and create the situation that will best serve YOUR learning and boating requirements
